Scarabs, hand-carved in Egypt since ancient times, are carved out of soft steatite stone, (faience), and then kiln-fired and glazed. Part of an ancient tradition of wearing protective amulets, the wearer is endowed by the qualities that the amulet represents, protected from evil forces and bringing good fortune. Scarab beetles portrayed the beetles persistence in rolling a dung-ball, from which new life would be born, and being guided by the light of the moon towards new life that sun brings with the dawn.
